Arter Drug Store
The location of the Arter’s Drug Store has been the home of a drug store the longest time of any location in Akron. The first drug store was owned by William T. Cutshall about 1850. In the years it passed through the following g hands: Milo Bright, A. F. Robinson, Hall and Cline. Then a fire destroyed the buildings. The present brick building was built in 1910. J. E. Garwood conducted the drug business and sold to W. C. Hosman. Earl Arter, present owner, bought the store in 1924, and has conducted a prosperous, modern Rexall store.
Current Update The business then passed on to Wayne Norris who was an apprentice of Earls. In 1995 the store closed due to Wayne’s health issues.
Mishler Pharmacy
In 1897 Emory Scott came to Akron to clerk in the J. E. Garwood Drug Store. In 1898 he started the business for himself. In 1902 he erected the brick building and started the Scott Drug Store. His brother Albert joined him. Later Emory Scott retired from the drug business and sold to Albert Scott and Earl Arter who became partners. Then Earl Arter sold his interests to Albert t Scott and started a drug store on his own. E. L. Scott opened a sort in the Scott building for the sale of musical instruments and he was also an optometrist. He died in 1944. Albert Scott retired from the drug store and Royce Mishler, of Lafountaine, became the owner on January 15, 1946.
Current update: Later selling to Lyle “Bud” Harris. Harry Webb and Steve McNutt purchased it from Bud in October 1995. In the summer of 2016 the store was moved caddy corner to its present location in the RTC building at 100 E Rochester St
